Wednesday Spotlight – Shelly Bell

Author Shelly Bell is a fellow Greater Detroit RWA chapter member. Shelly lives in the metro area with her husband of eight years whom she met online through a dating site. They have two elementary-aged children and a two-year-old Labradoodle. Shelly is a corporate attorney specializing in the scrap metal industry. When she’s not working, writing, or playing with the kids, she reads romance novels on her Kindle.

When were you first published/how long have you been writing?

I started writing in February of 2011. I had no idea what I was doing and did everything wrong. A few months later, I put that manuscript on hold and began writing A Year to Remember. I simply had to write it. When I finished, I was offered a contract from two publishers. My book came out less than a year after I began writing from Soul Mate Publishing. I consider myself very blessed.

So tell us about your current project or release!

A Year to Remember is about a twenty-nine-year-old woman, a compulsive overeater, who makes a drunken vow to meet and marry her soul mate before she turns thirty. After the vow ends up on YouTube, she permits a national morning news show to follow her search. As her journey takes her from Michigan to Israel, she’s forced to choose between marrying a man who loves her and staying single to be with the man she loves. Before she can make her decision, she must first face her addiction to food.

The book is available now as an e-book and will be released in print this summer.

My current project is a paranormal romance. It’s actually the book I put on hold when I wrote A Year to Remember. Of course, I had to completely start over because it was really just a big info dump with some sex. I’ve learned so much about writing in the last couple years. I’m hoping to find a home for my paranormal and turn it into a seven book series. I’m also in the early stages of plotting a three book women’s fiction series. The story is fresh and original, but it requires a lot of planning before I begin writing. I love writing in both the paranormal romance and women’s fiction genres, so I’m hoping to continue both.

I love to communicate with out writers and readers. Visit me at Shelly Bell Books, and follow me on Twitter and FacebookGoogle PlusGoodreads and Linked In …

A Year to Remember is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Soul Mate Publishing. You can also enter to win a signed copy through Goodreads.

Thanks for visiting with us, Shelly! And best wishes on your future career!

Wednesday Spotlight – Lisa Orchard

Today the spotlight shines on fellow Michigander *and* fellow Astraea Press author Lisa Orchard. Welcome, Lisa! She lives on the “other side of the Mitten” but we won’t hold that against her. ;-)   How long have you been writing?

Hi, thanks for having me today! I’ve been writing since the fifth grade. I started out reading mysteries and still love them today. Reading the “Bobbsey Twin” series and the “Nancy Drew” series inspired me so much that I knew I wanted to be a writer.  Of course, there were periods in between then and now when I didn’t write because I was working on another goal, like college, but I knew being a writer was my dream.

I read the Bobbsey Twin and Nancy Drew books too, plus Trixie Belden, and they all started me on my love for mystery! When did you first get published, Lisa?

On March 13, 2012. The Super Spies and the Cat Lady Killer is my debut novel, but it won’t be my last!

In a small Michigan town, fifteen-year-old Sarah Cole is stuck at her Aunt and Uncle’s. With her sister, Lacey, and a friend, Jackie, the three girls stumble upon the ruthless murder of a reclusive neighborhood woman. Fearing they will be blamed, they become the Super Spies to solve the mystery. Why would anyone murder the “Cat Lady?” They soon uncover an old crime linked to the present. The Super Spies realize it’s up to them to snare the Cat Lady killer, or die trying…

What a great premise, Lisa, and I bet YA readers would love it! So what’s next for your career?

I’m going to continue with the Super Spies series. In fact, I’ve just sent the sequel to my publisher, the awesome Astraea Press. I’ll keep everyone posted on the details. I also plan to branch out into other genres as well. I’ve started another story that’s more of a drama than a mystery. We’ll see where it goes.

HAPPY SWEET ST. PATRICK’S DAY!

Today I’m sharing something I’ve been working on for a long time. In fact, it’s the first romantic historical I wrote. It’s not published — mainly because it needs a LOT of work yet. But I’m hoping to finish the revisions this year. Anyway, here’s a sweet snippet.

Michigan, 1895

“What in heaven’s name—oh. Oh, no.”

Libby slowed to a walk and winced at every loud hammering jolt. Stacks of wood planks lay in piles on the empty lot, and rectangular wood frames waited to be nailed together. She’d heard rumors in spring of someone seeking an acre in or near the village. Talk had died down. Now the evidence was clear. A thin stoop-shouldered man in brown trousers, a white shirt and vest chose planks and pounded them together, then set them aside to select more wood.

Today of all days, when she was already late for the Ladies’ Aid meeting. Libby needed sugar and a few other groceries, too. The wind had a bitter chill. Who was this stranger? She didn’t recognize him, and her brother failed to mention a possible buyer.

For her parcel of land.

She crossed the plank road, aware of the clothes flapping on the line behind the nearest white-frame house. Trees had blocked her view until now. Yesterday at noon the field stood barren. Now this unknown carpenter must have started at dawn and thrown together a basic foundation for a house plus framing for walls. The nerve of him! And her brother—Ben should have consulted her before agreeing to sell land deeded in her name.

Libby marched across the uneven ground. She had to know who this man was and why he’d chosen Cady Corners. His collarless shirt was soaked with sweat, his trousers’ backside sported a patch, but a flat-crowned straw hat shaded his face. He pounded away with abandon. Clearly unaware of her approach, he continued to work with hammer and wood. Align planks, select and pound nails, set aside the joined angles of wood, lift two more pieces into place, repeat. The soothing rhythm had a life of its own.

She hated to interrupt his focus, but had no choice. “Excuse me, sir—sir!”

The man veered around, eyebrows raised. “Morning, ma’am.”

“Yes, it was a good morning,” Libby said and frowned. “I live across the road in that small house, next to my brother’s brick one. With the ironwork fence.”

“Nice sturdy house.”

“Yes, thank you. I have a few questions for you.”

“Oh? What might that be, ma’am?”

He pushed his hat back, revealing deep brown eyes beneath dark eyebrows. A shock of gray hair fell over his wide forehead. His face looked too young—Libby shook herself. First of all, it wasn’t her business how old he was. Second, why was she flustered by his slight Southern accent? She breathed in and out, trying to calm her racing heart and gather her wits. It didn’t mean anything. It shouldn’t.

Or did it?
